How to Create More Uninterrupted Time in Your Day

Posted by Practical Paper Co. on

Life is busy, messy, and full of interruptions. Whether it’s the kids asking for a snack (again, how often do these little beasties need to eat?), a coworker who loves “popping in” unannounced, or your own wandering thoughts, staying focused can feel impossible. But creating even a few minutes of uninterrupted time each day can make a huge difference for your productivity—and your peace of mind.

Here’s how to start:

Step 1: Notice Your Interruptions

Take a day or two to simply observe what’s pulling your focus. Is it external, like constant notifications or chatty coworkers? Or internal, like an unorganized workspace or racing thoughts? Write down what you notice. This awareness is the first step to creating change.

Step 2: Brainstorm Solutions

Once you know what’s interrupting you, it’s time to problem-solve:

  • For Necessary Interruptions: If the interruptions can’t be avoided (like taking care of young kids), think about how to create balance. Can you set up a quiet activity for them during your focused time? Or schedule your tasks during nap time?

  • For Unnecessary Interruptions: If the interruptions aren’t as critical, try setting boundaries. This could mean silencing notifications, closing your door, or having a direct (but kind!) conversation with someone who’s often interrupting your work.

Step 3: Create Space

Sometimes, the best way to avoid interruptions is to physically remove yourself from them. If you’re working on a task that needs focus, head to a quieter part of the house, a library, or a coffee shop. Changing your environment can also give you a boost of fresh energy.

Step 4: Start Small

Even five or ten uninterrupted minutes can make a difference. Don’t feel like you need a perfectly quiet hour to make progress. Celebrate the small wins and build from there.

Step 5: Give Yourself Grace

Some days, interruptions will win. And that’s okay! What matters most is that you keep coming back to your goals and your planner. Progress isn’t about perfection—it’s about persistence.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, try these steps and let me know how they work for you! Share your own tips for creating uninterrupted time in the comments—I’d love to hear what’s working in your life.

Here’s to a little more focus and a lot less guilt!
